CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Salvatore cared about Lara, he and Vita had two sons and eight grandchildren, but they saw her as the daughter they never had. Initially he was grateful that she had kept them in her employment, but he saw her devotion to the house and the area as she developed it and he and Vita quickly came to love her.
Lara was incredibly generous, allowing them to bring their children and grandchildren to use the pool when she was not there. She had even allowed his family from England to stay there when they visited. He knew that she also invested in the local community although she didn’t advertise the fact. He and Vita wanted her to meet someone, they wanted her to be happy, but when she brought Scott to the house Salvatore disliked him on sight. He thought him superficial and out for what he could get, accurately assessing his character. They also noticed that he showed no interest in the house or Italy which given this was a part of Lara was upsetting for them.
Lara loved him though and he and Vita welcomed him as much as they could, hoping they were wrong. Salvatore and Vita hadn’t seen Lara since the news of their separation. They had seen the media attention and felt for her, gaining no satisfaction in their correct opinion of him. When they got a call from Jackie to say that Lara, Mel and other colleagues were coming, the short notice didn’t bother them and they looked forward to seeing her.
Salvatore drove Nikki around the countryside and then into town. He could see that she was already captivated by the house and Italy. If Vita was to be believed she may also have fallen for Lara. Vita claimed that she had seen that Nikki looked at Lara in a way that suggested her feelings went beyond friendship. What he knew so far about Nikki he liked, and ultimately he just wanted Lara to be happy.
They arrived at the town and Salvatore showed her around the centre with its narrow streets and churches. Nikki had felt close to Salvatore immediately, she insisted on taking him for a coffee in one of the small cafes. They sat outside in a small square.
Nikki brought out the expressos. Whilst she had wanted a cappuccino she knew from her reading on Italy that that was a breakfast drink. “Salvatore this area is so beautiful. I can see how at home Lara is too, I hope that she gets enough time to enjoy it.”
“Not as much as I’d like her to, but she works so hard.”
Nikki smiled. “Yes she’s very driven.”
Salvatore had been instructed to find out what he could about her, Vita would not be happy if he came back with nothing. Vita would have relished the opportunity, the way she could get information from people she could have written Nikki’s biography by now. “Have you known Lara long?”
Salvatore could see the sadness on Nikki’s face. “No just a few weeks.
